Brewpub VS Micro
February 3, 2009
SO as you all know, in South Carolina you can either be a brewpub (on premise sales only) or a micro (off premise sales only). My group , SC Brewer’s Association (formerly Pop the Cap), is working to allow dual license flexibilty. In our case, we’ll keep doing what we’re doing but will be also be able to operate as a brewpub for on premise sales. Rep. Herbkersman will be introducing our bill this month in Columbia. Now, if it passes no problem, we hope to add the taproom this summer. Let’s assume the worst though, it doesn’t pass. Distribution costs are absolutely killing us, would it be a smart move to completely abandon being a micro in favor of only on premise sales. Can we sell that much in pints, growlers, bottles etc? If you had to choose, would you rather have your pint of HopArt at the 38 tap locations in town or ONLY at the brewery?
And yes, it sucks to have to choose between them and we sincerely hope this bill passes and we won’t have to.
Decisions.
Please stay tuned for updates on the bill and what you can do to help.
edited to add: It would be oh so fun to have our version of a Dark Lord Day, wouldn’t it?!
