COAST Tours, Tastings and Sales Information

We’re not prepared. Both mentally and financially, we didn’t want to start work on a tasting area if the bill was not going to pass. But, alas here we are! Right now, we will be winging it a bit to see what works best as far as how we will go about all this. My brother in law is working on a bar base while Fisher Recycling will be making the bar top (recycled glass- they are incredibly beautiful). We’ll be using leftover Brewvival glasses for tastings. We have some growlers already but will be filling other growlers (clean ones) for the time being. We really have no idea how many people may show up so supplies may be limited, I’ll keep our twitter account updated with what’s available for sampling and what may be gone for the day. We have not yet expanded and will be doing our best to not short change our current accounts, they are our first priority.

Hours will be as follows and are subject to change as the need fits:

Saturdays  11-2

Thursdays 430-730

Most likely Mondays 430-730

We are aiming to start this coming week but check back this weekend for a definite on that. PLEASE remember a few things:

*We are a working brewery (=messy!). We currently don’t have any employees so are  stretched a bit thin.

*Please stick to scheduled times (as changing as they may be). We are usually unable to stop what we are doing to give a tour.

*It’s H.O.T. in the brewery. There’s no way around it, so be prepared for that. If this works out we’ll look at adding an air-conditioned/ or otherwise cooled area but for now, expect heat. Beer is always cold though.

* We can sell up to one case (288 oz.)/per person/per day. This includes:

12-22 ounce bottles

24-12 ounce bottles

4- Growlers

*CASH only, we are unable to accept credit cards at this time.

* It is law that we price our beer approximate to prices at retail stores.

*Valid ID required.

* Did I mention it’s hot in the brewery?

H. 4572 passed our 3rd Senate reading this past week! We have to go back to the House for approval and then on to the Governor. We expect there to be no problems and those steps as formality. If all goes well, I expect the law to be in effect within 3 weeks or so.

What does 4572 do?

* South Carolina breweries can give 4- 4 ounce samples as well as up to a case sales per person/per day. A case can be 12-22 ounce, 24-12 ounce bottles or 4 growlers. This must be in conjunction with a tour.

* Retail stores (like Total Wine & the Charleston Beer Exchange) can hold 96 beer tastings per year. The retail facet is a bit more restricted in sample size (2 ounce) but hey, it’s a start!

Stay tuned as we figure out how we are going to run our tasting rooms and tours, hours, etc… it is HOT in the brewery (no a/c) so summer hours may be odd. Excited!

the Belafonte, a (hoppy) Belgian Pale

May 10, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — ptcsc @ 6:38 pm

Our next seasonal went out today, our first Belgian! It is a beautiful golden color with a white, fluffy head. Some nice phenols combine with a light, wheaty malt backbone. Considerable hops and the nice Belgian tang bring it all home. So drinkable at 5.7% and perfect for this summery spring weather. We’re really happy with our first Belgian and hope you are too.

the Belafonte is Steve Zissou’s ship in the Life Aquatic.

A combined brewery tasting bill AND beer retail tasting (seperate from our  bill 3693- brewery tastings) is being contested. Please contact Senator Phil Leventis and ask him to support this bill. It encourages growth across the board for the craft beer movement.

In this instance, emailing is preferred:  philleventis@scsenate.gov

This time around he is 9.7% abv and we bumped up the Citra Hops even more because we are just loving this hop variety. Think tropical fruits like mango and pineapple- the aroma is simply beautiful. We’re so glad he’s back!

Draft only and should start showing up at the end of the week.

My thought on Beer Festivals

March 5, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — ptcsc @ 9:57 am

Okay so I’ve seen lots of folks state that more festivals should go the rout of buying beer like Brewvival did- well maybe

Plenty of other beer festivals are fine just the way they are since they fill whatever intention set by the festival organizers- we just went by a different philosophy then that and it works for what we want

Also: just because we had so many rare and one off beers does NOT mean that is all that you should seek out- in fact quite the opposite

My own personal hope as the outcome of Brewvival is this: You would try some styles/beers that you may not have had before and may not ever again- which is great- and then you would go home to wherever it is your from and drink both from your local breweries and maybe try some of the beers from the breweries you experienced at Brewvival- not just try to find the ever elusive one-off beer from 3 years ago that was aged in barrels from a 100 person town in the countryside of Slovenia (you get my point)- these are all great beers but maybe even more important are the daily drinker beers that are sometimes forgotten about- my 2 cents anyways

(and yes my  comma and period keys don’t seem to be working—)
